Why Taking Political Science Classes is Essential for Everyone:

As a double major and double minor, I have had the opportunity to take a wide array of classes spanning from Biological Anthropology to French Literature to Calculus II to Social Choice and Election Theory. With these classes, I have learned various topics crucial to an undergraduate’s experience; however, none have been as important as classes in political science.

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, understanding the complexities of politics is more crucial than ever. Political science, the systematic study of government, politics, and political behavior, offers invaluable insights into the structures and dynamics that shape societies. Regardless of your major or career aspirations, taking a political science course in college can provide you with essential knowledge and skills applicable to various aspects of life.

Political science encourages critical thinking and analytical skills. It teaches students to assess information objectively, consider multiple perspectives, and make well-informed judgments. These skills are invaluable in various professional fields and everyday situations, fostering a more discerning and open-minded approach to problem-solving.

Effective communication is a cornerstone of success in any field. Political science courses often require students to engage in debates, write persuasive essays, and present arguments coherently. These experiences enhance public speaking, writing, and negotiation skills, which are vital in any career.

Political science students frequently collaborate on group projects, enhancing their teamwork and leadership skills. These skills are vital in managerial roles, collaborative research projects, and any job that involves working with diverse teams.

Incorporating political science into your college education enriches your intellectual and personal growth. It equips you with essential skills, knowledge, and valuable perspectives in various aspects of life. Regardless of your chosen field, political science provides a strong foundation for understanding the world, fostering critical thinking, enhancing communication skills, promoting civic engagement, and preparing for diverse and meaningful careers. Embracing the study of political science benefits individuals and contributes to creating a more informed and engaged society.
