CITS is offering an exciting opportunity to ROTC students to develop their Russian language skills and cultural competence through its study abroad program in Riga, Latvia. This unique intensive overseas language program offers a rigorous academic curriculum and a rich array of co-curricular activities..  The program is designed to immerse students in the Russian language, culture, and communities in the Baltics. The 9-credit program offers an intensive study abroad experience that capitalizes on intellectually rich cultural hubs of the Russian-language émigré in Riga, a magnificent Latvian capital on the Baltic Sea. The intensive program is designed to enable cadets to make rapid progress in Russian while acquiring regional expertise in the geopolitical context of Eastern Europe/the Baltics/NATO.

Program Overview

The University of Georgia’s Project GO program is designed to immerse students in the Russian language, culture, and communities in the Baltics. The 9-credit program offers an intensive study abroad experience that capitalizes on intellectually rich cultural hubs of the Russian-language émigré in Riga, a magnificent Latvian capital on the Baltic Sea. The intensive immersion is designed to enable students to make rapid progress in Russian, while acquiring regional expertise in a strategically important geopolitical context of Eastern Europe/the Baltics/NATO and at an exciting cosmopolitan location.

The curriculum features an average of 20 hours of formal instruction per week, with additional individualized tutoring and social activities with Latvian students serving as conversational hosts. The program offers homestays with carefully vetted Russian-speaking families. Students additionally enjoy weekly cultural excursions around Riga and Latvia, as well as guided multi-day trips to Estonia and Lithuania, allowing for an exploration of the intertwined histories, politics, and cultures of East Slavic territories. All courses are taught by experienced faculty in small groups.

All Project GO programs provide funding for: tuition/fees, room and board, travel to/from study location, books, insurance, and visa.

The University of Georgia program additionally includes funding for trips around Latvia, as well as overnight trips to Estonia and Lithuania.

In case of unprecedented circumstances that preclude international travel, the University of Georgia Study Away Program in Honolulu, Hawaii will serve as an alternative site for summer immersion.

A minimum of 2 semesters of Russian are typically required. Placement interviews are offered to establish proper levels of placement.

The following costs are not included in Project GO Funding and are the responsibility of the participant: personal spending money, personal travel, costs for obtaining a passport, medication, and expenses for dependents, if any.
