SPIA Statement on Diversity and Inclusive Excellence

The School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) prepares students for good citizenship and for careers in public life – so states SPIA’s mission. Diversity and inclusive excellece have particular meanings for SPIA, considering this mission. For a school dedicated to the study of governments and governance, diversity and inclusive excellece inform the most basic concerns in our fields, such as representation, participation, and empowerment. We believe that when we support diverse voices, viewpoints, and experiences, we forge more widely representative, more participatory, and more resilient communities. In the process, we also promote respect and human dignity.

We endeavor to realize our goals for diversity and inclusive excellence at SPIA through concrete practices, programs, and actions. SPIA’s efforts are organized into four categories:

  • Representation, Participation, and Recognition
  • Curricula and Pedagogy
  • Access and Opportunity
  • Outreach and Partnership
