Mayor Denson and Community Connection to partner for “Mayor’s Call to Service”
September 25, 2013

Athens, Ga – Mayor Nancy Denson is partnering with Community Connection Northeast Georgia – and their program HandsOn Northeast Georgia – to launch a new ongoing initiative called The Mayor’s Call to Service. Launching October 14th from the Georgia Theatre in Downtown, Athens, the program aims to promote and strengthen the culture of service in Athens-Clarke County by connecting volunteers to local organizations.

“We are calling on people of all ages and backgrounds to step out into their neighborhoods and experience the Athens service community,” says Denson.

The public is invited to attend the October 14th launch at The Georgia Theatre. Thanks to a donation from Georgia Power, there will be no charge for admission. Instead, attendees are asked to bring a canned good for the Northeast Georgia Food Bank. Organizations are invited to set up tables and recruit new volunteers. All local residents, students, and visitors are encouraged to come learn about service opportunities. Live music will be provided by the Classic City Band and Community Connection will be on hand to help sign up volunteers for local service opportunities through their HandsOn Northeast Georgia website.

“Anyone expecting only a few dry speeches will be very disappointed,” says UGA MPA student Tommy Valentine, who is volunteering as Director for The Mayor’s Call to Service. “The 14th will be an opportunity to celebrate service, network with other volunteers, discover new organizations that deserve your time, and shine the focus on our partners, Community Connection.”

Following the launch party, Mayor Denson plans a series of weekly videos celebrating the Mayor’s Agency of the Week and Mayor’s Volunteer of the Week. The first planned video is with Fenwick Broyard, Executive Director for Community Connection Northeast Georgia.
“I’m thrilled that the Mayor has chosen to lend her support to encouraging volunteerism in our city,” says Broyard. “It is our belief, at Community Connection, that local needs can be met with local resources and people power, and this is definitely a step in the right direction.”
