It is hard enough to narrow down your values, future career aspirations, and, of course, your genuine interests when you arrive at UGA. As you approach the end of sophomore year, you’ll notice that it’s the season of summer internships, and it can feel overwhelming not knowing where to begin. Luckily, SPIA prepares you well for any internship, whether working for a legislator, a campaign, interning with advocacy groups, or anything else you put your mind to. As a third-year political science major, my SPIA degree has prepared me well to focus on my interest in environmental policy. In the summer of 2023, I interned with the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters. This was a hybrid internship that I did in my home state and was one of the most academically enriching experiences I’ve had during my undergrad years. CTLCV is a nonpartisan, non-profit environmental advocacy group that directly lobbies at the state capital in support of protecting our planet. Working at a state scale, I learned about the legislative process and how difficult it is for any bill to get through both the House and Senate in a timely manner. I also learned more about the controversy and delays that environmental bills face than any other group. This experience inspired me to work even harder and to raise awareness about our climate. It solidified my aspirations to work in a career pushing environmental bills on a federal level. I highly recommend looking locally and finding advocacy groups that represent your interests. SPIA does an excellent job of frequently sending out internships and job opportunities to ensure students know about all the opportunities that await them! I would advise anybody struggling to find an internship now or in the future to lean on your SPIA peers, counselors, and professors to carve out your passion to pursue!
