Outside the Box: Building an Academic Identity Beyond the IR Canon
Abstract: While research and teaching in International Relations has evolved considerably over the years, many topics outside of the “traditional” IR canon remain marginalized and present challenges to early researchers who want to remain relevant in the discipline but have new and creative ideas they wish to pursue. Some students or early career academics may even be dissuaded from pursuing research they are passionate about in favor of more “established” research topics. As a successful researcher, teacher, and community activist in the oft-overlooked areas of women in politics and human trafficking, Dr. Kate Perry shares her advice on building an academic identity in spaces beyond traditional IR, particularly through interdisciplinary, intersectional, and collaborative methods.
