Morocco, the gateway between Europe and Africa, is actively pursuing new sustainability and development policies, as well as progressive social initiatives, articulated in their “Vision 2030” plan. Economic growth, women’s rights, strong public education, environmental preservation, accessible healthcare, and sustainable energy are all central to the Vision for the state’s future. Amid major shifts in Moroccan political, economic, and social outlooks, as well as the growing impacts of climate change to region, the Kingdom of Morocco and its citizens see great opportunity for the state, despite challenges. As we travel, we will explore ways in which Morocco and its diverse population are progressing toward numerous goals while seeking to address many regional and domestic challenges. As the tourism industry is central to Morocco’s development strategy, this is an exciting opportunity to actively utilize our own experiences traveling as a lens to investigate broader political, economic, and social evolutions unfolding across the country. Throughout the trip, we will explore Morocco as a case study to help analyze Middle Eastern politics, economics, and social dynamics writ large. Each student will conduct a guided, independent research project that will culminate in a final paper, due after returning to Athens.
