The SPIA a Firenze program is a newly designed study abroad program that launched in May 2022. While our main residency will be in Florence – the capital city of the Tuscany region – our itinerary will also include major cultural tours of Rome, Verona, Naples, and Pompeii as well as optional trips to Venice and Sorrento. While in Florence, students will explore the Tuscany region, experience an Italian cooking class, visit ta Refugee Center and learn about the politics of preservation in this city that is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. Courses are offered primarily in International Affairs and Political Science.

About Firenze (Florence)
+

Firenze (Florence) is the capital of Toscana (Tuscany) regione (region), central Italy. The city, located about 145 miles (230 km) northwest of Rome, is surrounded by gently rolling hills that are covered with villas and farms, vineyards, and orchards.

One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell’Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”

Another highlight is the Tuscan cuisine. From Bistecca alla Fiorentina and Panzanella to Lampredotto – Food is an expression of Italy’s cultural and political identity.
