Oak Ridge National Laboratory Trip

In March 2017, eight students from the Master in International Policy (MIP) Program, accompanied by CITS Executive Director and MIP Program Director Dr. Sara Z. Kutchesfahani and CITS staff, traveled to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for four days of technical classes on nuclear safeguards and hands-on exercises with radiation detectors. The students learnt about job opportunities in the field, specifically at ORNL, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and at the Prepartory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). The students participated in many technical tours organized and led by ORNL, including a graphite reactor that was built as part of the Manhattan Project, the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), a portal monitor test bed, and the Y-12 National Security Complex.
