SGA’s First Year Programs

Hello! My name is Parker Buckroyd and I am a second-year Political Science and International Affairs Major, with a minor in Law, Jurisprudence, and the State. Coming into freshman year, joining clubs here on campus can be intimidating, at least I knew they were for me being an out of state student. But by branching out of my comfort zone, I was able to find the most valuable experience of my freshman year, SGA’s First Year Programs. This opportunity gave me the chance to see how UGA’s student government association functions both in legislating new statutes, and how our student government has such a large impact on the local Athens community. In my designated sector, Forum, I was able to expand my knowledge of Athens through community service sites, while also building meaningful friendships that will last me throughout my college years. This experience not only connected me more deeply to UGA, but also strengthened my passion for public service and student leadership. It showed me how student government serves as a bridge between the university and the local community, and gave me insightful mentors willing to help navigate my first year being so far away from home. Another thing I especially valued were the weekly meetings, which quickly became something I looked forward to each week. These gatherings weren’t just about policy, they were a chance to listen to speakers and discuss with other like minded people. Our sector had opportunities to interact with other branches of SGA, like Senate and Engage, which also gave me a broader perspective on how each part of student government contributes to the whole. So, if I have one piece of advice for a UGA freshman, it would be to apply to SGA’s First Year Programs. You will not regret it!

Best,
Parker Buckroyd
