Hi everyone! My name is Kennedy Baker, and I am a third-year Political science student with a minor in Law, Jurisprudence, and the State and a minor in Law, Ethics, and Philosophy on the Pre-law track. I hope this post can help navigate SPIA clubs and programs!
Clubs:
- Undergraduate law review at Georgia (ULGRG):
- ULRAG is UGA’s premier student-led publication for legal writing. ULRAG aims to provide a space for UGA undergraduates to write articles about legal topics, including supreme court cases, controversies, and theories.
- Moot court:
- Moot Court models appellate court oral arguments, similar to what is used by lawyers arguing cases before the Supreme Court, cultivating a knowledge of constitutional and critical thinking skills.
- Mock Trial:
- Mock trial allows students to simulate court trials handling criminal and civil cases. In mock trials, students analyze hypothetical cases and apply historical cases to support their arguments as attorneys and witnesses.
- Model United Nations (UN):
- Model UN is an interactive simulation of the United Nations where students act as delegates from various countries and debate topics ranging from economics to global terrorism to human trafficking.
Minors:
- Law, Jurisprudence, and the State:
- The Law, Jurisprudence, and the State minor allows undergraduate students to take classes taught by UGA law school professors. This minor encourages students to learn about the following:
1) Legal Professional practices
2) Society, politics, and culture
3) Law in other times and places
*Application required
- Law, Ethics, and Philosophy:
- This minor allows students to achieve a deeper understanding of legal and ethical modes of thinking and increase their familiarity with philosophical concepts and arguments.
Programs: (*All require an application)
- Applied Politics:
- This program takes what we have learned in political science and applies it. This program engages in real-world applications, where students generate theories, research, and make predictions about political outcomes.
- Security Leadership Program (SLP):
- SLP aims to encourage the next generation of national security leaders, particularly on issues related to diplomacy, intelligence, WMD nonproliferation, human security, and strategic trade management.
- Certificate in Global Studies:
- This certificate focuses on theories and methods in global studies, foreign languages, cultures, and foreign areas, as well as global issues such as ecology, peace, and development.
- Center for international trade and security (CITS):
- CITS empowers students through cutting-edge research, policy analysis, and collaborative initiatives to teach students about complex international security challenges and navigate the intricate world of global trade.
- Inside Out
- Inside Out aims to bring together campus-based students with incarcerated students for a semester-long course held in a prison, jail, or other correctional setting. This program focuses on community building, the criminal justice system, and sociology.
- SPIA Study Abroad Programs:
- SPIA study abroad programs take place at the University of Oxford, Scotland, Ireland, U.S. national parks, Morocco, Italy, South Africa, etc., to help students gain a global perspective while learning.
