Why I Love Being an International Affairs Major

Choosing to major in International Affairs with SPIA has been one of the most transformative decisions of my life. From the first day of my introductory class, I knew I had found a discipline that perfectly aligned with my curiosity about the world and my passion for understanding how societies navigate their most pressing challenges.

The International Affairs major is far more than just the study of politics between nations— it’s an exploration of how systems of governance, security, economics, and culture interact on a global stage. What I love most is the breadth and depth of topics I’ve encountered: In one class, I might be diving into the intricacies of international law and human rights, and in another, analyzing the nuances of security dilemmas or trade agreements. This intellectual variety ensures that every semester brings something new and exciting to the table.

What sets SPIA apart is how seamlessly it bridges theory and practice. Classes like War and Human Security and The Politics of Cyber Security don’t just teach concepts; they encourage students to apply these ideas to real-world scenarios. Another highlight of the International Affairs program is the community of passionate, like-minded individuals. My peers are just as eager to engage in debates about global issues or analyze recent developments in world politics. The faculty in SPIA are equally inspiring by challenging us to think critically about the complexities of international relations.

This major has also shaped my personal and professional goals. Studying International Affairs has not only equipped me with the analytical tools to tackle global challenges but also inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to public service, diplomacy, or advocacy.

To incoming students, if you’re drawn to understanding how the world works and want to be part of a major that pushes you to think globally, International Affairs might just be the perfect fit.
