Dr. Lihi Ben Shitrit publishes new book

In her new book, “Women and the Holy City: The Struggle over Jerusalem’s Sacred Space,” SPIA professor Dr. Lihi Ben Shitrit explores the gendered lens in the struggle over holy sites in  Jerusalem, sacred for the Jewish and Muslim peoples. Ben Shitrit argues that women’s roles in several site-specific conflicts have been largely neglected by empirical research.

In the book, Ben Shitrit looks at three separate women’s movements in Jerusalem’s Sacred Esplanade: Women for the Temple, The Murabitat, and Women of the Wall. Ben Shitrit explores how looking at women’s engagement in conflicts may illuminate the reasons why contention over holy sites become so indivisible in broader conflicts.
