More About

Born and raised in Montréal, Nicolas received both his bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science from the Université de Montréal. Being from the mecca of hockey, he grew up with the stories of the sports legends like Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur and Jean Béliveau. The Richard riots of 1955 who are seen as one of the catalysts of the national awakening in Quebec and the start of the Quiet Revolution inspired Nicolas to research the effects of sports on politics both domestically and internationally. His master’s thesis “The World Cup, PSG, and Qatar: Are Sports Diplomacy Strategies Efficient,” looked to determine if sports centric strategies have any tangible effects on the country’s coverage and reputation. He was awarded a master’s level research grant from the Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Société et Culture.

Nicolas has presented his research at multiple conferences like at the annual conferences of the International Studies Association, Canadian Political Science Association and Northeastern Political Science Association. He has also been interviewed as an expert on Canadian national television to talk about Saudi’s investments in professional tennis.

Nicolas is a native French speaker, is also fluent in English and understands Vietnamese. Outside of his research, he is naturally a massive sports fan, with hockey and soccer being its favourites.
