These figures reflect average manpower per month, on land, not the
peak contribution from the French in a given year. For example, since
roughly 4,000 French naval infantry fought for one month in Savannah
during 1778 and there were no other French contributions that year, the
average number of French soldiers in the United States during 1778 was 333
(333=4000/12).
These figures do not include French officers that volunteered under
Washington's command, nor soldiers involved in the battle of
