Sydney Brashears is a second-year graduate student studying international policy and Graduate Assistant for the Center for International Trade and Security. Her research interests are in nonproliferation, weapons of mass destruction, energy security, and intelligence.

BA in Psychology and Political Science from Auburn University

More About

Sydney is from Montgomery, Alabama and received her BA from Auburn University in 2022. Since moving to Athens to join the MIP program, Sydney has taken on a number of roles with the Center for International Trade and Security and several internships. In May 2023, she completed an internship with the Department of Commerce where she gained hands-on experience with the intersection of export controls and nonproliferation. In conjunction with her studies, she also maintains her position as a defense intern for Noblis, assisting with the company’s pursuit of new business opportunities. When she’s not at class or in the office, she enjoys cooking, listening to true crime podcasts, and spending time with her friends.

Of Note

Sydney tries to practice French any chance she gets to maintain conversational fluency and looks forward to studying Arabic in the years to come.

Honors, Awards, and Achievements

In July 2023, Sydney completed Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Nuclear Nonproliferation, Safeguards, and Security in the 21st Century Course. Through this course, she was able to gain hands-on experience with international nonproliferation efforts including nuclear materials accounting, acquisition pathway analysis, and APEX training.

Research Interests

Sydney’s research interests are in nonproliferation, weapons of mass destruction, energy security, and intelligence. She looks forward to drafting her Capstone on an emerging technology or policy concern in one of these areas.
