On February 7, 2023, students, alumni and friends gathered on the 30th floor of Troutman Pepper to hear a discussion between renowned University of Georgia professor Dr. Charles Bullock III  and the new Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns at the 2023 Georgia Legislative Outlook.

The Georgia Legislative Outlook is an annual event hosted by the SPIA Alumni Board of Directors which features a discussion with Georgia legislators about the current legislative session. Funds raised for the event support the initiatives of the Alumni Board which include support for need-based scholarships for study abroad, MPA students, and top funding priorities established annually by the dean.

The hour-long discussion was filled with fast-paced questions from Bullock spanning topics from proposed changes to Georgia’s runoff elections to possible sports betting in Georgia. Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, the late Speaker of the House David Ralston, Burns continued the strong relationship the Speaker’s office has had with SPIA students in the 11 years of the event. Among the audience members who engaged in a question-and-answer period were SPIA students who had the opportunity to discuss legislation affecting their hometowns and the campus community.  The event raised more than $45,000 from sponsors including Delta, Verizon and Georgia Power all of whom were in the audience as well.
