Darbi Steckman, a McDonough native, is an undergraduate at the University of Georgia pursing International Affairs and Political Science degrees along with a Masters in Public Administration. She is passionate about nonprofit work and healthcare policy in developing countries.
My passion for nonprofit work began during a trip to the rural regions of Guatemala. When we visited a clinic, the lack of resources and equipment shocked me. The majority of the population cannot afford to visit a clinic, let alone have the ability to access one. The clinic itself could not even afford to maintain operations on a daily basis. After planting fruit trees in remote villages on another visit to Guatemala, we learned how many of the children face malnourishment their whole lives. I feel called to serve and help in a larger capacity than simply volunteering my time and energy. I hope to draw from the skills and knowledge gleaned from my three degrees, professors, and colleagues to pursue a career in improving healthcare quality and access in developing countries. In addition, I hope to develop leadership skills to work for and eventually manage a nonprofit.
