CITS engages industry in China

CITS held an “Industry Outreach and Engagement” workshop in Beijing on March 10-11 2015. It is the second workshop in a series designed to share best practices in the area of strategic trade control. Participants included officials from Chinese Ministry of Commerce, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Commerce, Korea Strategic Trade Institute (Seoul, Korea) and Center for Information on Security Trade Control (Tokyo, Japan). They shared experiences in working with industries from both policy and compliance angles. This workshop was co-organized with China Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC).

SPIA student Kathleen Wilson named 2015 Truman Scholar

Kathleen Wilson, a junior majoring in international affairs in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia, is one of 58 students nationwide to be named a 2015 Truman Scholar and is UGA’s fifth recipient of the scholarship in the past five years. Truman Scholars receive a $30,000 scholarship toward graduate school and the opportunity to participate in professional development programming to help prepare them for careers in public service leadership.

CITS training for Ukrainian nuclear professionals

The Center for International Trade and Security, in partnership with Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Bulgaria, hosted a training workshop for a group of high-level Ukrainian nuclear professionals on "Addressing and Mitigating Insider Threat." in Sofia, Bulgaria between April 8-11. The workshop was funded by the United States Department of State’s Partnership for Nuclear Security (PNS) and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with logistical support provided by CRDF Global .

Alumna Travels to Brussels on Fellowship with European Parliament Liaison Office

For SPIA alumna Kendra Pengelly, her dreams of working in international policy have become a reality, and she has the School to thank. “I graduated in December of 2014 and started working for the European Parliament Liaison Office with US Congress at the beginning of the New Year,” said Pengelly. “ I analyze legislation and policies vital to the trans-atlantic relationship between the EU and the US.” As the Robert Schuman Fellow at the European Parliament Liaison Office with US Congress, Pengelly focuses on policy relevant to homeland security, cyber security, international trade, counterterrorism, nuclear security, international human rights, and the Middle East. She works alongside eleven European Parliament Senior staffers to encourage trans-atlantic dialogue.

The event was hosted by the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies on Friday, April 3, 2015. UGA PhD students, Courtney Yarbrough, Mikhail Ivonchyk, Megan LePere-Schloop, Seong Kang, Shannon Jackson, and Julie Meehan all presented papers at the event.
