May 15
Police-Community Relations Mural Dedication
4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Food for the Soul Restaurant

In the summer of 2017, freshman UGA students in Dr. Brian Williams First Year Odyssey Seminar class, “The Current State of Police-Community Relations: Problems and Prospects,” partnered with Athens police officers and kids from local youth outreach programs to paint a mural depicting police-community relations. Students from Dr. William’s class helped design and paint the mural with help from local artist and community organizer, Broderick Flanagan. The mural, painted on the side of Athens restaurant Food for the Soul, shows how police-community relations have been in the past, how they currently are, and how they should be in the future.

On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, SPIA, the Office of Government Relations and the Office of Instruction will host a dedication ceremony at the site of the mural. The event is free and open to the public.

Parking Information: The entrance to Colima Ave off Broad Street will be blocked off. Parking will be available on the surrounding streets as well as at the Clarke County School District Office on Dearing Ext.
